I try to keep this blog focused on the positives. Honest, I do.
But I’m so tired, and so hurt, and so tired of being hurt. I don’t know how to respond when family and friends defend J.K. Rowling or her works – not that I have friends who do, because they know she’s a wretch of a human being who pours her money into hate campaigns against people who are just trying to life their lives authentically.
There are still people in my life that defend her, though. And it’s painful. So… Here’s just a sample of why I say the art can’t be divorced from the artist.
I’m just going to zero in on the money she spends to fund anti-trans organizations and legislation. A wonderful breakdown of her hateful actions was done on tumblr by user deepcoraldragon; for more about all this, I’d urge you to read her post.
Just, I’m begging you all. If you’re not going to stand against Rowling, understand that you are transphobic. Even by being passive, you are actively condoning her hate – you’re telling trans people that we don’t matter to you. And this is just about the transphobia! There are other issues that can be found in the Harry Potter books themselves, but this is the campaign she’s thrown her full weight into.
Weight meaning pounds, in this case. British pounds. Ha… ha…
Okay.
The ‘J.K. Rowling Women’s Fund’ supports cis women in legal battles concerning ‘women’s sex-based rights.’ (x) She created it, she funds it, and she uses it to financially back those who claim to be traumatized by sharing a space with trans women.
Rowling supports the hate group, ‘For Women Scotland’. They were in a legal battle to restrict the legal definition of man and woman to their ‘biological sex,’ which would exclude trans women from sex-based protections. (x) They had lost a previous case to the Scottish court, but with a donation of 70,000 pounds from Rowling (x), they were able to push the UK Supreme Court into passing the resolution in April 2025.
She has threatened lawsuits for defamation against journalists who report on her misinformation and hate speech. (x)(x)
And, possibly worst of all, she's been a big donor for the Labour Party (x). In 2024, they offered to meet her to discuss their gender transition policy, (x) which she agreed to. She also wanted them to meet several other organizations in-person first, including hate groups like Woman's Place UK and the LGB Alliance (x). If you don’t understand the way lobbying and politics work, I can state it simply – by giving the Labour Party money, Rowling gets to influence their policies. She gets to turn the UK into a dangerous place for trans people.
There’s so much more she’s done. She’s doing. You must understand, she hates us, and she has the money and influence to do something about it.
But only because of the people who support her.
