No Fool; April 1 2026
Happy April, everybody! Here’s a fun fact about me:
I loathe April Fool’s Day.
The closest I’ve come to pulling a real prank was kind of the inverse of one, in that I just sincerely let people know I was pregnant on April Fool’s Day of 2018. The joke being, of course, that I really was pregnant with the ultrasounds to prove it.
I grew up very confused and hurt by pranks. Which, in hindsight… Of course I was, as a neurodivergent kid who didn’t find them funny.
On the flipside, though, my daughter loves April Fool’s Day.
So I compromise.
I’ve hidden a ton of plastic eggs around the house, most filled with Christmas-themed jibbitz – you know, those charms for crocs? Kids go wild for those, nowadays. They have a whole playground economy based on jibbit trading.
But some of the eggs don’t have jibbitz. They just have a slip of paper in them saying, ‘April Fools!’
That’s it. That’s my very clever prank. Oh – and, almost forgot, I have some chocolate carrots (AKA cone shaped chocolates wrapped in foil that makes them look like carrots) that I also hide around. Only a few, because her visit from the Easter bunny is imminent, but just as an extra treat.
So that’s how I spent my morning, for the most part! Filling eggs and hiding them. Then I went about writing up my final essay-style exam for Politics class, so it’s been a productive day so far!
My only sad news is that I wound up dropping one of my classes, but I want to talk about it. I felt so defeated at first, realizing what a large hit my GPA would take even if I aced the final exam – the rest of my marks were incredibly low.
The reason for this being, I don’t use AI to study.
My professor told us in the very beginning that he recommended having ChatGPT quiz us before taking our tests. The reason became plain, because I strongly suspect the tests themselves were written by AI, too. And… Well, I don’t mesh with AI. I will never agree with its use.
So I’m going to try the course again with a different professor. One who hopefully doesn’t use AI in the making or marking of tests.
Happy springtime, y’all – I hope you’re all also doing what’s right for you!
