Chuck and Tonia; October 21 2026
I have a new short story out for free, courtesy of FLARE Magazine! Voices Carry is about a disabled siren singing to her lady love, with some consequences.
I was at Can*Con this past weekend, where I had the privilege of meeting Chuck Wendig! He spoke on some incredible panels and I walked away feeling inspired, with a brand-new book idea I’m going to spend some time throwing around in my brain.
Author Chuck Wendig and R. Haven.
I also got to meet Tonia Laird, who was on Bioware’s writing team for some of my favourite games. It was an honour to get to hear her talk on decolonizing fantasy. I wish I’d gotten a picture with her, too, but I didn’t want to keep her too long after the panel!
But speaking of Bioware…
It’s awful to hear that EA is shutting down Bioware. I’ve been reading about the situation via Wikipedia, for the most part. I’m so disheartened by the state of… well, all aspects of the entertainment industry, really. The reinvention of cable TV, only worse, because now you have dozens of subscriptions that pelt you with ads even though you’ve already paid for them. The shutting down of gaming companies, the dividing of games to coerce players to buy the ‘downloadable content’ in order to fully experience the game.
And naturally, book publishing is just… Publishing is rough. They dump all their resources behind big-name authors and give fewer and fewer chances to emerging ones, then blame the new authors when sales are poor. They’re the ones choosing not to market these books.
My heart goes out to all the writers needing new jobs, now.
You know what, it also goes out to the writers being denied the chance to find some footing in this industry. Myself included.
