Wheelchair; September 2 2026

Hitting new stages of disability always comes with grief. I thought I was prepared for it – I’ve known for a long time now that people with my form of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome generally start needing wheelchairs in their mid-30s.

My wheelchair arrives in a day or two from now. I’ll have to get used to a whole new way of navigating the world, and that sucks.

But, I’m trying to see the good parts where I can. For example, the subway station where my doctor’s office is was made accessible late last year. My university has accommodation services. My daughter is undoubtedly going to be thrilled if she’s allowed to sit in my lap as we go. Stuff like that.

Speaking of accessibility (but in a wildly different context) I recently learned that the way my site’s shop was set up wasn’t allowing people to actually check out with their book purchase! So, I’m making The Other Face of Sympathy available via contact form instead. If you’re interested in buying a copy, just message me via my contact form!

Lastly, for my personal piece of celebration… I’ve upgraded my kid’s bedroom! She’s officially outgrown her old toy box and bin shelves. She has a proper shelving unit now, a desk, and a much bigger wardrobe to house her clothing. She’s so excited about it, and I’m excited to organize (and donate some of) her stuff.

School starts in one week. Wish us both luck as we return to classes!
